STARS (Student Academic Research Scheme) is a strategic initiative by Universitas Brawijaya (UB) to enhance the quality and quantity of research through collaboration with national research institutions (BRIN) and international academics. This program facilitates students to complete their final research at national research institutions (BRIN) or at partner
universities/research institutes abroad, guided by UB lecturers and partner lecturers, with the
expectation of increasing the positive impact on UB’s research and international reputation. UB STARS activities may be recognised as part of the MBKM Research program.
Program Objectives
- To improve the research quality of Universitas Brawijaya students (Diploma, Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral) through collaboration with BRIN or foreign universities.
- To expand students’ access to resources such as laboratories, libraries, data collection, and supervision by BRIN researchers or foreign lecturers.
- To increase the number of scientific publications from student research in reputable international journals.
- To build national and international academic networks that support UB students in completing their final projects.
Scope of Activities
The scope of the activities includes:
- The research theme undertaken by students is collaborative research between UB lecturers and partner researchers/lecturers.
- Collaborative activities include student supervision, data collection and processing, report preparation, and writing scientific articles.
- Financial assistance for students can be used for:
○ Transportation support for mobility to/from national research institutions (BRIN) or foreign partner universities/research institutes.
○ Mobility fee support while conducting activities at national research institutions (BRIN) or foreign partner universities/research institutes.
○ Accommodation support while conducting activities at national research institutions (BRIN) or foreign partner universities/research institutes.
○ Insurance support while conducting activities at national research institutions (BRIN) or foreign partner universities/research institutes.
Target Participants
Students who are working on their final projects (bachelor/master thesis or dissertation) and have supervisors from Universitas Brawijaya and partner universities or research institutes abroad, or from national research institutions (BRIN).
Expected Outcomes
- Research collaborations that enhance the quality and originality of student research.
- International publications of student research results in reputable journals (Scopus or Web of Science).
- Increased academic competencies of UB students in national and international research environments.
Activity Scheme
- Funding application: Students can apply for the program once to complete their final research at national research institutions (BRIN) or partner universities/research institutes abroad.
- Activity implementation: Students conduct research under intensive supervision by UB lecturers and BRIN researchers/foreign partner lecturers.
- Incentive application: Students apply for incentives to UB after obtaining approval from their supervisors and the Head of the Study Program. The incentive amount is based on the research location and is directly transferred to the recipient student’s bank account.
- Monitoring and evaluation: The research implementation at the partner university is monitored and evaluated regularly by UB and partner university supervisors. Activity reports are submitted to the UB Stars committee by the students, with supervisor approval.
Funding Assistance
The UB STARS program provides financial assistance as follows:
- National (BRIN): Maximum IDR 10,000,000
- International:
○ Southeast Asia: IDR 12,500,000
○ Asia: IDR 15,000,000
○ Europe, Australia, America: IDR 20,000,000
Funding Application Requirements
Students applying for incentives must submit the following documents:
- Student Transcript (KHS) indicating that coursework is completed, or there are no pending courses required for graduation.
- Recommendation letter from the thesis/dissertation supervisor and the Head of the Study Program (Attachment 1).
- Proof of communication and agreement on the research topic between the UB supervisor and the foreign university/research institute lecturer or national/international research institution (BRIN), which can be in the form of email screenshots.
Output
The outputs of this program include:
- An article submitted to a reputable journal indexed by Scopus or Web of Science, involving UB and partner supervisors.
- The submission of a research paper to a journal within six months after the student returns to UB, with the assistance of the UB or partner supervisor.
Program Duration and Implementation
The UB STARS program places students at BRIN or foreign partner universities for a maximum of six months or one semester, or as determined by the partner university or research institution.
Program Implementation Mechanism
The program is implemented as follows:
- Registration: Students register via link , submitting:
- Transcript (KHS)
- Letter from the Head of the Study Program (Attachment 1)
- Parental consent letter (Attachment 2)
- Supervisor’s recommendation letter (Attachment 3)
- Proof of communication between the supervisor and BRIN researcher/partner lecturer
- A research proposal outlining the background, objectives, methods, data analysis, and activity timeline (maximum 3 pages, Attachment 4).
- Selection Process: The UB STARS team will review and select the submissions.
- Announcement: The announcement will be made in October (for 2024) for the pilot project of the Odd Semester 2024-2025.
- Disbursement of Funds: Before the disbursement of funds, the full research proposal must be submitted. The disbursement will take place after the incentive recipient decree is issued.
- Activity Implementation: The UB STARS program for the Odd Semester 2024-2025 will begin in October 2024. For the Even Semester 2024-2025, registration will open in November 2024.
- Monitoring: The UB STARS team will monitor the activities and research output submissions (within six months) and published outcomes (within one year).
- Reporting: Detailed reports should be uploaded via the provided link.
